Involuntary loneliness is a growing societal challenge that affects both mental and physical health. The risk often increases during major life transitions, such as becoming a parent, going through a divorce, or entering retirement.

To help address this, we at Wenderfalck partnered with Apotek Hjärtat to launch Vänvård—a national initiative aimed at preventing loneliness through proactive care of social relationships. Inspired by traditional wellness programs, Vänvård encourages employees to invest in their friendships as a form of preventive health care. As the first employer in Sweden to do so, Apotek Hjärtat introduced “friendship time”, 15 minutes per week (or one hour per month) during working hours to call a friend, grab a coffee, or connect meaningfully with someone.

The initiative launched as a pilot and will be evaluated before a potential rollout across the entire organization. As part of our work, I developed a graphic style derived from Hjärtat’s existing identity and brought it to life through original illustrations. These were animated into four educational films for the internal launch—offering employees practical tools for strengthening personal relationships and supporting others who may be experiencing involuntary loneliness.
